(PDT) Photodynamic Therapy

What Is PDT?

PDT is a clinically proven actinic keratosis treatment as well as an effective option for addressing sun-damaged skin and precancerous changes caused by long-term UV exposure. Dr. Hany commonly recommends PDT for patients dealing with actinic keratosis, field cancerisation, or significant sun damage, as well as for those seeking skin cancer treatment.

How Does It Work?

A light-sensitising medication, known as a photosensitiser, is applied to the affected area and allowed to absorb into the skin. Once absorbed, the area is exposed to a specific wavelength of light that activates the medication. This process triggers a reaction within the abnormal cells that selectively destroys them while sparing the surrounding healthy skin. Mild redness, sensitivity, or swelling is a normal part of the healing response and typically resolves within a few days.

Benefits of PDT

Because the photosensitiser concentrates in abnormal cells and the light is applied directly to the treatment area, PDT minimizes damage to healthy tissue. It's also an excellent choice for patients with skin cancers or precancers, as it does not cause scarring.
